ELTE is Hungary’s most prestigious university with the richest traditions and the highest international rankings in the country. It became a Research University in 2010 and received the distinguished title of University of National Excellence in 2013. ELTE is the highest ranked Hungarian university in the 2013 ARWU global university rankings, and the only Hungarian establishment among the top 200 European universities in the rankings compiled by the University of Leiden.
The mission of ELTE is to preserve and enrich national and universal culture, to cultivate science and to pass on academic knowledge, as well as to shape and satisfy the real, long-term needs of Hungarian society and of mankind. In a modern, knowledge-based society, higher education plays a crucial role in making use of knowledge.
ELTE launched the first master’s program in criminology in 2011, as well as the country’s first Erasmus Mundus doctoral program in this field. As a sign of the international attention directed to the program, the European Society of Criminology held its annual conference at ELTE in 2013.
